On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the most abortion-expansive legislation that ever reached the floor of either house of Congress since Roe v. Wade. The “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act,” often referred to as Obamacare, requires federal agencies to subsidize and administer health plans that will pay for elective abortion and will undermine pro-life policies in other ways as well. National Right to Life Legislative Director Douglas Johnson, stated that the bill allows “…direct federal funding of abortion on demand through Community Health Centers, institutes federal subsidies for private health plans that cover abortion on demand – including some federally administered plans – and authorizes federal mandates that could require even non-subsidized private plans to cover elective abortion.”
Evidence of the latter has already been seen in the Department of Health and Human Services mandate (HHS Mandate) that requires all employers to provide health insurance that covers contraception and abortion-causing chemicals, even if it violates the employer’s faith to do so.
Despite this setback in Washington, D.C., Pro-Life Americans in Ohio and around the country are successfully resisting the culture of death and working toward a culture of life and love. Abortions in Ohio, and in Lorain County, are decreasing. Our elected Ohio leaders passed a number of Pro-Life measures including a ban on late term abortions, a ban on abortions in public hospitals, strengthening of Ohio’s Parental Consent for Abortion law, and legislation ensuring that Ohioans won’t have to pay for abortion coverage in Obamacare.
